Durham also has many private golf course communities as well as public golf courses with housing nearby. Executive housing is available in both the established older areas and the newer communities.
- Condominiums are available close to Duke University. Old tobacco warehouses have been renovated into chic condominiums close to East Campus and Downtown Durham. Traditional condominiums are also available. Durham does not; however, offer high-rise condominium buildings yet.
- Townhouses are a popular option for Duke students, faculty and medical personnel. There are several communities within fifteen minutes to Duke Medical Center and the Duke campuses. Garages are available on some of the newer luxury townhomes, but the majority of townhomes do not have covered parking.
- Houses are available in a variety of ages and sizes. There are many older homes in downtown built between 1910 and 1950. Downtown Durham is undergoing a major renovation to the commercial are and many of the older homes are being restored. Just outside of the downtown limits there are several established communities with lovely homes. Both to the north and south of downtown, there are newer communities with amenities such as a neighborhood pool. Most of these newer communities offer sections for different builders and price ranges.
- Acreage and Rural Areas are available with a thirty to forty-five minute drive to Duke University and Medical Center. Bahama, Roxboro and Rougemont are communities in Northern Durham that offer enough acreage for horses. Some older neighborhoods will have half to one-acre lots at affordable prices.
